Temperature Controllers and Industrial Chillers

Temperature controllers are instruments that accurately control the process temperature on any demanding, dynamic application. The purpose of temperature controllers is to reduce the dependence on extensive operator involvement, by relying upon a controller, which accepts a temperature sensor such as a thermocouple or RTD as input. Temperature controllers provide an output to a control element by comparing the desired control temperature, or set point to the actual temperature.

Selecting a Temperature Controller

Depending upon the system to be controlled there are three basic types of temperature controllers; on-off, proportional and PID. There are also single-loop, multi-loop and power temperature controllers. You should consider the following when making your selection: Type of input sensor and temperature range, type of output required, control algorithm required and number of outputs required.

Temperature Controller Safety Issues

In certain applications, the control circuit electronics and associated system hardware for temperature controllers requires testing by an independent agency to meet specific construction and operation requirements with respect to life and property safety issues.

Safety factors of varying size should always be included to allow for unknown or unexpected conditions. How long is your system going to be operating before there is a chance of failure. The size of the safety factor depends on the accuracy of the wattage calculation. Heaters should always be sized for a higher value than the calculated figure.

Industrial Chillers

Industrial chillers are applications used to pump cooled water or other liquid through process or laboratory equipment. In an industrial setting such as die-casting, machine tooling, chemical processing, plastic injection and blow moulding industrial chillers maintain temperature control of the equipment to avoid sudden breakdowns. Industrial chillers are extremely important in the food and beverage processing industry, vacuum systems, x-ray diffraction, power generation stations, analytical equipment, semiconductors, gas cooling as well as MRI machines and lasers.

Temperature controllers on industrial chillers assist in creating a safe, smooth and efficient application when it comes to temperature control whether it is applied to the equipment used in creating a product or the creating of a an air-controlled plant environment.
